Organising a kids party

26 June 2008

This friend of mine is organising a birthday party for her 6 years old son and she's pretty stressed out about it.

She's worrying about not making fun enough dishes, not having everything ready on time or misscalculating the servings...you know how kids are: they devour it if they like it but wouldn't take one bite if they don't like the looks of it Laughing.

I was wondering if you have any experience with this stuff, any advices you could give her?

One thing I do for my four year old is make faces out of his sandwichs.  Take the sandwich and cut off the crust.  You can use noodles for hair.  Olive slices for eyes... or even grapes cut in half. Red pepper slice as a mouth, (depends on what your sandwich is made out of - I use peanut butter and jelly with macaroni & cheese hair and banana slices for eyes)

Another thing you can do is cut up fruit to resemble animals, a pear-half can be turned into a dog's face with the addition of apple-skin ears and a cherry/grape nose.  A quarter of an apple can be made into a sail boat with jello water and cheese slices cut in half to form the triangular sails.

Do you have jello/flavored-gelatin moulds? You can also use cookie cutters to form fun jello shapes.

Is she ok with serving ice cream?  Clowns can be made from one ball of ice cream wit

Such great ideas! I'm sure she'll be thrilled. She's been telling me about making face sandwiches but that's about the one idea she had in mind when I talked to her. Even if I'm not a kid that pear-dog and apple-boat idea makes me wish someone would trow me a kids party Laughing.

Lol, I know!   I make silly little pictures for my four year old out of his food for lunchtime and he loves it...

Another thing she might try researching is octodogs... half a hotdog/sausage cut so that it has legs, and when you heat it up they curl and turn into little octopus figures! Try http://lunchinabox.net/2008/02/23/octodogs-revisited-fry-hard/

And I realized I didn't finish what I was saying about teh ice cream clowns... turn a cone upside down on a scoop of ice cream then decorate with candy/frosting to make a clown face wit ruffles and a pom pom on the tip of the cone-hat.

They sell them in bakeries and ice cream shops but they are quite easy to make!

That clown idea sounds very creative. I've already sent her the link and she really liked the octopus idea. She also asked me to thank you, she said your ideas really helped her stop panicking. She'll be having the party next weekend :)
